It’s been my experience that innovation often emerges from adversity. Take for example how Calexa came to be. A month before my high school graduation, I was on top of the world. I was heading to my college of choice to play baseball and study architecture. Unfortunately, a few weeks before graduation, I was hit by a car while riding my bicycle home from baseball practice. I suffered a traumatic brain injury (TBI) which required a craniectomy, or the removal of a significant portion of my skull, so my brain could swell and repair itself. I was given Last Rites and a 50% chance of survival. While I won’t bore you with the details of my rehabilitation, I will share that a year after the initial surgery I learned I’d have to undergo another craniectomy. I knew I didn’t want to again wear the off-the-shelf helmet, so I designed and built my own. I got approval from my rehabilitation team at Johns Hopkins to use it instead and Calexa was born. Today I am a product designer instead of a baseball player or architect and my goal is to develop tools that make life easier for medical professionals and patients in the healthcare setting.

Calexa is a combination of the Latin words for skull (Calvaria) and cover (Obtex). The specific meaning of the combined word, “skull cover” was the original focus of our company - to build a better traumatic brain injury helmet. And we did, by developing the innovative Calexa Protective Helmet.

PRODUCTS
The Calexa Lead Tamer was designed to keep EKG and other leads detangled and organized, saving nurses and other users valuable time.
It can be used for up to six leads at once and it is simple to remove one or all in only a few seconds. It is also durable, inexpensive, easily cleaned
